Interview with Jackie Ferrigan

Our many thanks to Lucy Webster for giving this interview.

I have been interested in Pulis for 6 years now.

A friend of mine has a clipped Puli that I looked after one weekend and fell in love with with the breed. I then began my search! At this point I knew nothing really about the coat or dog shows. I found two contact numbers in the back of a dog magazine, and was delighted to learn from one breeder a five month old puppy boy was available. With my partner, we hot footed it up to Devon, and there began my journey!

Having been told about the Puli Club and the Open show, we decided to go along to see other Pulis. This is what started me on dog showing, and I have never looked back! I go to most shows up and down and country and for a beginner have had quite a bit of success. three Reserve tickets, one at Crufts this year, two Best in Shows at Open Shows, and 3 Reserve Best dogs! 'Dylan' has now been joined by 'Flo' !

Both dogs bring so much fun and enjoyment to my life, I would never be without them. Flo recently took the Best Puppy title at SKC.

Dylan was great at Agility, we never competed, I just started it as a bit of fun for me and him. It also brought a smile to the other members faces, seeing a Puli jump is just amazing, and Dylan was so in to it, he just flew round the course (not always the right way, but he tried!).

I have also done Obedience with him, which he went from the beginners class to the advanced class in straight succession. I'm sure he would be great at herding, he has only had one chance at this, and this was by mistake and he was let lose in a field with a couple of horses, before we knew it they were standing together!!

For the past 3 years I have been involved with Discover Dogs at Earls Court, last year I was approached by the Editor of The Dog Collection to ask if they could use my dogs in a photo shoot for the Puli edition. I knew Dylan would be fine as he is reasonably obedient, I was not so sure about Flo as she was only 6 months old.

Towards the end of November we drove up to London, I took my mum with me as the two are a lot to handle in a strange environment. The dogs were great and took every thing in their stride, the photographer was very professional and just snapped away! Many treats were used, but they got the shots they needed. The only downside was when we finished, Flo decided to do the biggest poo in the middle of the bright white set!! A bit embarrassing, but everyone understood.

Dylan and Florence have never done this type of work before, but are very used to attention, as on our daily walks, we are generally stopped by people wanting to ask questions and stroke them!
