Judgement Day

JD found the drive to the show most pleasurable, his attractive companion was a delight to have along. Most unfortunate that her car had broken down the day before, but, living reasonable close by, he was only too pleased to have been able to help by giving her and her dog a lift. Indeed it was also very lucky they had both booked into the same motel to break the long journey. He pulled into the lane leading to her friends house, where she and her canine alighted and walked the rest of the way.

Naturally none of this was mentioned as she was greeted by her friend, although something vague was said about her husband not wanting to hang around as he had a early appointment. After a quick breakfast, she left with her friend and their dogs, to go to the show.

The show venue was quiet when JD arrived, the secretary and show team were already there and coffee was offered in the hospitality tent, after which it was time to have a brief chat with the secretary and exchange a few words about the society's next show. Next, find the ring and to assess if his stewards were going to be the sort who would do most of the work for him, judging dogs was tiring business, and the more things one could get the stewards to do the better. Also to sort out that refreshments would be on hand, and that the stewards knew exactly what time JD would be breaking for lunch. Most important as he had arrange to meet a well known chairperson for lunch, together with one or two Kennel Club members.

Exhibitors were beginning to arrive, and as JD walked back to the hospitality suite he came face to face with an old friend. "Still in the breed I see" said JD in way of greeting, his old friend who looked as if he were in the middle of moving house with cages and bags piled high on a trolley. "Doing well?" asked JD although he knew what the answer was. His parent’s old friend had cross swords with a few power hungry people in the canine world, and was not considered to be in with the correct crowd.

Resulting in not a great deal of success for his dogs or breeding. The exhibitor stared at JD, smiled in an odd sort of way, as he turned to pull his trolley towards the benching tent he said "One day my dogs will win, on their own merit and that alone" and walked off.

JD shrugged, thinking of his first puppy, from that same promising litter two other puppies had been shown, one by the breeder one by the man he was now talking to and whom had become so friendly with his parents over the years.

An ability to discuss all the finer points of the breed, learnt in a matter of a few short months, did not go unnoticed by people from JD’s early appearances in the ring. To many it was clear that with such a wealth of knowledge he would soon be judging the breed, probably at a very young age. JD got top marks at a breed judging seminar by learning to say the right things and referring to the particular points of the breed the teacher considered important.

Indeed it was not long before he had been asked to officiate at a breed show, and he was on the ladder to giving certificates in the breed. The fact the steward on this occasion more or less had to point out which was the head of the first exhibit placed before him, went unseen by the majority present. This first venture into the spot light gave JD a remarkable feeling of self centred satisfaction, to be in control was something he yearn for.

However JD knew there were limitations, his own dogs were doing reasonably well in the ring, but what he wanted was a closer contact to someone holding more power. By chance, one exceptionally lucky day JD had been introduced to the daughter of a very prominent canine person in the canine world. The daughter was single, who had been working abroad until recently, clearly loved her dogs and was planning an extensive campaign now she was back in the UK. What better chance would he have? Finally, when JD moved away from his parents house, this girl friend eventually move in and became a very well known and successful hostess in dogdom, as well as a well known handler.

Her mother however was not happy with the situation, and did much to make a lot of unpleasantness. Finally the daughter had succumbed and headed home to her mother. By this time JD had been elected Secretary of the breed club (if one can be elected if there isn't any competition that is) and kept good control over that society. Nothing happened there without the say so of the Chairperson, so, the committee being made up of a suitable group of yes men, meaning the position JD held was not usually difficult.

Entering the hospitality tent JD realised that within a period of a few short years he had gained success in dogdom that many would never even start to achieve. Naturally of course he never doubted that it was all down to his own abilities. People went out of their way to greet him, his imminent election to the Klub Kanine had spread like wild fire, and before he returned to the ring for the start of judging he had been offered numerous appointments.

JD watched the exhibitors take their charges around the ring, there were he thought to himself, not for the first time, quite a few extremely attractive female handlers in the breed. The morning wore on, JD was slightly bored, his female companion from the drive down, won the female certificate. Lunch had been a delight, and meeting up with his friends most valuable and interesting. Having to return to the ring was a bit of a nuisance as he could happily have spent most of the remainder of the day chatting.

Suddenly, completely out of the blue, JD surprised himself by seeing a dog at the end of a lead which stood out as a most beautiful representative of the breed. This dog was talking to him, telling him she was the best, that she was there to win. It was a very large limit bitch class, and as if a switched had been thrown on, JD looked around and as if for the first time saw the dogs and not the exhibitors. He struggled with his senses for a few moments, he JD could not been seen to make a fool of himself, but wait, the dogs that he would normally have considered for the places were by no means of the same standard as this particular four legged female, even he could see that now.

Something within had taken over his powers, before he knew it he was giving this dog first place, the challenge certificate and then best of breed. The owner was to say the least elated, the dog also went on to win the group and took reserve best in show. An accomplishment indeed for a dog little heard of until that day.

JD's female companion of earlier had thundered from the ring when BOB went to the bitch, her face contorted with anger, tearfully she had asked her friend to take her home. The lady was never seen again at a show. JD did not exactly miss her on the return journey, his mind awash with what he was going to tell his wife, would the truth come out? But deepest of all in his mind were the words of his friend as he walked by leaving the best in show ring "I told you, one day my dogs would win on their own merit".

Rumour does have it JD has seen the error of his ways, and is considering revealing all in a book, and that interest for a short documentary has already been expressed by a TV company.
