The Game

The puppy JD had bought achieved fame, as a youngster she won nearly every class entered, and was declared the top winning puppy in the breed for that year. Judge was thrilled, handling the dog to her Championship title and winning a group. The young handler was seen to be a rising star, and continued slowly up the ladder.

One big disappointment JD suffered was his female’s inability to produce a litter. In the meantime however Judge continued to play the game with his parents. He started to show the dog his mother had bred and often found himself competing for Best of Breed against the female the breeder had chosen from the litter and was exhibiting. The third puppy who had been seen to do so much winning as a youngster, had also become a champion, but had not been seen in the show ring for some time. Judge was delirious at his success, he certainly knew how to hold his own.

By now JD had become extremely good friends with an attractive young exhibitor in the same breed. Their friendship blossomed soon sparked rumours about an engagement, but it never about, Judge seemed to be waiting for something to happen. To JD’s parents it seemed a mystery as to why the two were such close friends, always going to shows together but appearing not to be prepared to tie the knot.. Consideration had never been given to his companions connections, or the fact her mother called many of the shots and marriage was not on the list.

JD had ambitions, he wanted to judge, he wanted to become a member of the KK, the elite force behind canine activities. JD wanted to be seen in the ring, to have his say on who and which dog won.

He wanted to become a major player in the game.

To do so JD had to play his cards carefully. He did. His female companion knew many people, JD took her to all the canine social events possible. They were there to be seen, and with his girl friend at his side, they were. JD was suddenly overwhelmed by the increase in the number of big wins his dogs were gaining. By now he had his own kennels. He had been invited to stand for election to the committee of one of the biggest dog societies, not that there would be an election. JD was already holding office as secretary of a society for the breed which had started his, and his parents, interest into the canine world.

He woke one day to find himself in the middle of a battle between two groups involved with the breed club. His companions mother came to his rescue and the matter was dealt with. However, JD was now left with a debt to pay.

Repayment included a incident connected with a small and normally trivial matter that involved the owner of the puppy from the same litter as JD’s first dog. JD’s parents had become quite friendly with this man, he was indeed very knowledgeable about dogs, and shared much of his experiences in the breed with them. Unfortunately however, he had decided to cross swords with the breed club chairperson over, what in principal, should have been dealt with easily.

The chairperson, good friend of his companion’s mother, though decided other wise, made a fuss and decided to make a big issue. For a time things were rather unpleasant all round, DJ’s parents were by no means amused as it involved their friend, the chairperson refused to budge, leaving DJ in the middle. In the finish the owner stepped down, said he wish to withdraw his comments and suggestions, and left the chairperson of the club in an even stronger position than before, rule by intimidation. Which was actually what the whole thing had been about in the first place!

Within the breed club there were two factions, those who backed up the chairperson without question, and those who felt the owner had been badly treated. JD naturally, and to the fury of his parents, had to back the chair.

JD realised at this point he needed to get away from his parents home, and started looking for a suitable property to start his own kennels, and run the way he wanted. This all happened remarkably quickly and smoothly, and soon JD found he had somewhere not only to house his dogs, and it was not long before his female companion moved in with him.
