Did You Know?

DID YOU KNOW?

Adult dogs have 42 teeth?

The canine has 42 teeth made up as follows:

INCISORS 6 to the upper jaw, 6 to the lower.

CANINE 2 to the upper jaw, 2 to the lower

PREMOLARS 8 to the upper jaw, 8 to the lower

MOLARS 4 to the upper jaw, 6 to the lower

Two molars in the upper and lower jaws are much larger than the rest, they are called the CARNASSIAL teeth. They have more than one root which can make them very difficult to extract.

An "eye tooth" refers to the two upper canine teeth?

That dogs do not have the same nerve supply to their teeth as humans? They rarely suffer pain due to broken or damaged teeth, most vets will though remove damaged teeth to save any future problems especially with eating.

Lameness is often caused by a problem in the paw?

It is a good idea to frequently check paws for:

Thorns in the pads. Cuts in the web.

Interdigital cysts. Thorn claws. Cut pads

Excessively cracked pads.

A puppy cries in a variety of ways?

Puppies cry in numerous tones from the moment they are whelped. Contented puppies make a soft murmur whilst feeding and first bark at about six weeks of age.

A puppy cannot hear at birth?

Most people know puppies are born blind, but did you know they cannot hear at birth either? Hearing should be fully functional at three to four weeks of age.

That congenital deafness is often associated with white coat colouring?

Elderly dogs often become progressively deaf?

By this age though an older dog will have leant to comply with the wishes of their owners, thus this need not become a problem.

Older dogs loose their sight?

Loss, or partial loss of sight, is not unusual in an older dog. The dog is usually able to cope well on familiar territory, but care should be taken not to move objects unnecessarily or put anything hazardous in his/her path.

That it is natural for a dog to .....

TO investigate any object, animal person who is unfamiliar to him - by rigorous sniffing?

TO help itself to any edible object left within his/her reach?

TO dig, mainly to bury and hide valuable objects such as bones?

TO feel lonesome, and to bark as a means to gain attention and companionship?

TO feel jealous of newcomers such as a new baby or puppy?

TO lick muzzles of dogs, and try to lick hands and faces of people, as a sign of affection?

TO eat the faeces of other animals, especially from cows, horses, cats and rabbits?

TO roll in obnoxious substances which are highly odorous?
