Introduction

Welfare of your pet, be he Hungarian Puli or any breed, is of the greatest importance.

Canines are domesticated animals are therefore reliant on their owners to look after their well being. From a sensible diet, appropriate exercise, grooming and insurance of veterinary care when and as required.

On the whole Pulis are a very resilient breed, they were bred for hard work and days on end throughout the year caring for their flocks on the Hungarian Plains. Conditions on the Puszta can be extreme, from exceptionally cold winters to blazing hot summers - people and animals had to be tuff to endue such a lifestyle.

Remember though, even though the word "puli" has its origins, the breed of today is based on a great deal of honor amongst breeders.

Indeed there have been hereditary conditions recognised in the breed, hip dysplasia and retinal dysplasia are indeed recorded as such by the Kennel Club. Other conditions also appear to be coming to light, which is by no means surprising when one considers the small gene pool of the breed.

Much of this naturally is due to the lack of foresight to those who in the second half of the 1900’s thought they were protecting the breed, by discouraging breeding and the expansion of the gene pool.

For those of us with a deep interest in the breed, we would urge that people pass or and share as much information on health related issues as possible.

The Puli Blog is there for this reason, and we would truly love to see a world wide sharing of Puli aliments and concerns.
