The Puppy Coat

The coat of a newly born Hungarian Puli puppy is short and usually straight, possibly with a slight wave, sometimes it is curly, and more than often very glossy.

This coat changes twice, first whilst the puppy is still quite young when a fluffy like hair replaces the short shiny coat, then as the puppy grows older the adult coat will start to appear.

It is during this period of time, say between nine to fifteen or sixteen months of age, when the developing coat can cause numerous problems - matting being the one which concerns most owners.

There are different types of coat, some contain more fine fluffy hair than others, and it is this which will easily form into large mats. Often this can appear to happen overnight, when it does, attention is urgently required!

More than likely the breeder of your puppy will have started to gently brush the coat with a baby brush or one with pin heads. This is done away from the lie of the coat, brushing at this time stimulates the skin and at the same time gets a young puppy used to being groomed.

When you have taken your puppy home, continue with this brushing until the coat appears to be forming into small "tufts" at the skin. From this point put the brush to one side, but do continue to massage the skin with your fingers.

I also suggest to new owners that during this time they introduce their puppy to the bath tub. Please do not try to bath the puppy the first time, just splash some water about and try to get him/her to stand still ……. It might take a few attempts but will make life much easier when the Puli is bigger.

The make up of the coat will determine how it develops and the type of cords it will grow into, there is not a great deal you can do about this! Even within the same litter you can get puppies with very different type coats. Basically, the more fluffy undercoat there is, the more likely hood there is of the coat matting up.

Grooming is done by using your fingers, gently pulling about the coat so that it resembles cords and the skin can be seen. Air circulation is essential to keep the skin healthy. Excess fluffy coat can gently be removed to achieve this.

A puppy will easily become bored if expected to undergo a lengthy grooming session, so try to do this on a regular basis.

Coat tends to mat more behind the knees, where the leg joins the body, under the tail, the tail itself, behind and on the ear leather, a certain amount will also grow within the ear, round the eyes and under the mouth. The paws will require trimming, between the pads and also ensuring that the coat does not become too long around the paw.

All these areas should be checked as you go over the dog.

By sixteen to sixteen to eighteen months of age, your Hungarian Puli should have the start of a lovely corded coat, but it will take between three to five years to get to ground level.
