Trimming

An Hungarian Puli does not have to boast a floor length corded coat to be a credit to his owner, a well trimmed Puli can look just as attractive. In fact many Pulis will more than likely feel far more comfortable and find movement a great deal easier, especially the older dog.

The amount of coat that you wish to trim is entirely a matter of personal choice, however there are certain parts of the Puli which require regular trimming - whether the dog has a floor length or short coat.

The muzzle, can become smelly because food has become impregnated in the cords. Trim these back. Around the nose, cut back the cords so they are not an obstruction - and the nose can just be seen.

The paws, trim round the paws so that they are nice and neat, and also insure that the hair around the pads is level with them. This help to stop the paw from "spreading" and also prevents any build up of mud (or ice) around the pads.

The rear, hygienically it is a good idea to trim some of the cords around the rear, and the cords on the belly of a male, all of which can get soiled and pungent with urine.

Clipping the cords to a shorter length is a reasonably easy technique. But you will require a pair of good scissors which you find easy to hold and work with. Should you decide you will be regularly clipping your Puli, investing in such a pair of scissors will prove invaluable.

Decide how short you want the coat. Start with a top layer, cut the cords accordingly and work over the whole coat, to give your Puli an even layered look. The legs may look better cut a fraction shorter. Angle the cut, so that you do not get a blunt look, which is not natural.

To do this type of trimming it is bet to work on a dry, clean coat as dirt and grit will quickly dull scissors.
