My World, My Things, My Place

My World

Your puppy has been used to being with his mother, brothers and sister. He has been used to being waited upon hand and foot, all his needs taken care of.

Now his world has changed, he is growing up, becoming independent, he has become part of a new family. Initially this will be unfamiliar and strange to him. Of course he will soon adapt and learn the new things that you will be training him.

Your home has now become the puppy’s new world, make him happy to be there. At the same time however, be fair and firm with him. An out of bounds area is exactly that, do not let him go there!

Let your puppy explore and find his way around the new surroundings, watch him from a distance. Hopefully you will have planned out where he is able to go, both inside and out, keep him away from any area where you do not want him. Any dangers, such as a deep garden pond, should have been made safe with a suitable net or cover, and make it a no go area for your puppy.

Be a leader, not a boss.

Simple training should start the moment your puppy arrives home, prior to his arrival a routine should have been set out for the newcomers care and attention.

Not just the puppy either! Children must be taught from the onset that a puppy is not their play thing, that he is still only very young and will want to sleep quite a bit.

My Things

Toys are part of a puppy’s life, they should be his toys, make sure children know this and do not torment your new addition to household by teasing the puppy with them.

Other things should be provided for your puppy, such as a suitable collar and lead, canine shampoo, his own towels for when his is bathed.

My Place

Your puppy will still want to have some time and space to himself. Suitable bedding, kept clean and dry for him.

For Puli puppies a crate is a great idea, this way your puppy will have a place to call his own, and, once he is used to it, you will be able to leave him for short times knowing he is in a safe place.

A toy box is a very useful item, as the puppy will learn from having a favourite toy taken out of the box, or that it is time to settle down, when the toys are out away.
