Clicker Training

There is a great deal more to this method of training, many books and videos are available, maybe this overview will give you some interest.

Clicker training is nothing really new, simply a way to describe a method of behaviour development in animals.

The system works by way of positive enforcement, it is not really depended on the clicker or food treats, but many dogs dislike whistles so the clicker is a good alternative to begin training.

The treats also are a good thing initially, but can of course be substituted for a favourite toy, or simply a pat, when the dog knows what is expected of him.

Prepare yourself with the clicker, a few tiny pieces of treat and your dog. Start in the garden, or indoors, by showing the dog the meaning of the clicker. In other words, you click, dog gets a treat, move around to different areas doing this.

Then click and delay giving the treat. Once the dog shows signs of actively looking for the treat, you will know the signal has become a re enforcer.

Now you have to teach yourself to be able to use the clicker quickly enough to teach the dog the behaviour skills you wish him to learn!

Using the clicker is more effective than your voice, the click being quick and effective. The trick is to get to click and just the right time - when your dog has done something you really wish him to do! Then simply click and treat!

Much can be achieved by this method, it is enjoyable for both handler and dog, but you still have to have considerable patience - especially in during the initial training to refrain from giving verbal instructions!
