UK Breed Standard Overview

The Breed Standard for the Hungarian Puli can be seen in full on the Kennel Club Web site:

www.crufts.org.uk

The Hungarian Puli is described as a medium sized herding dog, with extreme intelligence and lively. However, the Puli is often wary of strangers, but should not show any signs of nervousness or aggression.

Looking at the Puli sideways on, his over all appearance should be square. His body sturdy and muscular with a small slightly domes head which from the front looks to be round, and the side view being elliptical. His eyes dark brown, and his ears set below the level of his skull, should be a v shaped pendent being about half the length of his head.

The roof of his mouth should be uniformly dark, or variegated with deep pigmented spots, and with strong teeth forming a perfect scissor bite.

The back should be level, his shoulders well laid, his elbows tight and forelegs straight. Hindquarters strong and well muscled.

A tail of medium length, carried tightly curled over the rump, cover with similar hair to the rump so not to appear separate.

Cords are naturally formed by the correct proportion of top and undercoat entwining. To grow a floor length coat will take several years.

In the UK a combed coat is as undesirable as a neglected coat in the show ring.

Hungarian Puli coat colours come in black, rusty black, white and various shades of grey and apricot.

Dogs should be 40-44 cms in height and weigh between 13 -15 kgs, and females 37 - 41 cms, weighing between 10 - 13 kgs.
