The Hungarian Puli Introduction Index

The youngest daughter of the Owners of Puli Manor was very upset, not because it was Monday morning and she had to go to school, but because a rather special Teddy Bear given to her by her Aunt last Christmas had gone missing. Indeed it was very peculiar because the whole family had been home all weekend, neither had any visitors called. Well, at least that they knew of. Most of Sunday evening had been spent looking for the lost bear. To have been given Smiff for Christmas was a wonderful surprise for Debbie and launched her into what was to become a life time interest in Teddy Bears. Until now Debbie had preferred dolls, of all sizes, shapes and colours and her prize possession was a dolls house given to her by her parents. The Aunt, besides being a well known actress, was an avid Teddy Bear collector and often took her niece to Doll and Teddy Bear fairs, which is exactly where Debbie had first seen Smiff. "He reminds me a little of the Pulis", she had cried out to her Aunt. Debbie adored the four dogs, Dad, Mum and their two puppies, who shared the big house aptly called Puli Manor, with the Owner family. Her Aunt had given her a happy smile and they had walked off to the next display. "Come one Dean, come on girls" their mother called from the hall "you will be late for school!" Debbie, although she loved school, was reluctant to go but her mother promised she would again search the whole house before collecting the children later. Back home, the house seemed very quiet and still, even the Pulis, collectively know as The Mops", sensed there was something wrong. Mrs Owner kept a strict routine, the dogs liked it that way, so before doing anything else they went off for a walk in the nearby woods. None enjoyed the outing that morning, they simply wanted to get home and start looking for Smiff again. Monday morning was the day the cleaner came, so the Pulis were restricted to their play area whilst the work was done. Instead though Mrs Owner asked the cleaner if she would help with the search, a new pair of eyes might see something they had missed. Every room, every cupboard, every shelf was checked, but still not Smiff. "He has to be here somewhere" said Mrs Owner, "maybe the garage? the tool shed?" in desperation they carried on searching. "Um, Mrs Owner, you don’t think …." "Think what ….?" "Err, that the Pulis could have taken the Teddy Bear do you?" asked the cleaner in a quiet, questioning voice. "No way, they wouldn’t do a think like that ……. " came the reply, but a sudden and very unexpected feeling of doubt crept in to her thoughts. "Let’s go a check anyway ….. but they wouldn’t I am certain …." Mrs Owner and the cleaner made their way to the Dog Room, equipped with dog crates, beds, a grooming table, dog bath and a large dryer, plus a large box of toys. With relief and quilt she had ever thought otherwise, Mrs Owner looked out through the window to the Pulis playing happily in their run. Mom Kloe looked up and saw her watching them. "Wonder what is wrong" she muttered to Klogs, Mrs Owner is usually working in her office by this time on a Monday morning". "Do you think we should find out?" asked the young Pulis Kord and Kordette almost together. "Expect we will hear something when we go in for our meal later" replied Klogs. Later when they were brought into the house for their meal, the Pulis knew there was something going on. They followed Mrs Owner around for a while hoping they would find out, but it was not until she had fetched Dean and the girls home from school that they discovered about the missing bear. Clearly Debbie was unhappy, she sat on her bed saying "he must be here somewhere" over and over again. Kord and Kordette sat watching her, trying to understand. Kordette was about to fetch Smiff to give to Debbie, from his place on a small chair in the corner of the room, when she realised the Teddy Bear was not there. Very quietly Kordette nuzzled her brother, "Come" she said, we have work to do. Off they trotted, down stairs to the Dog Room. "What is it?" asked Kord. "Debbie’s special Teddy Bear is missing, we must help find him". "How?" asked Kordette "They have searched the house, haven’t they?" "The Bone" "What Bone? ……… Oh, that Bone" "Where is it?" "In the toy box!" Both Pulis leaped towards the box and started rummaging through it. The Bone was at the bottom. "Now what?" asked Kord "Wish hard that you could find Smiff" replied Kordette just as there was a loud bang and a flash of light. "Where are we now?" Kord muttered as he looked around the strange place. They stood in a large room, lined on three sides with shelves all full of Teddy Bears. Different shapes, many lovely colours, simply a wonderful collection of unusual bears. Kord and Kordette walked round the room, but there wasn’t any sign of Smiff. "Think we have got this one wrong" said Kord. "No, hold on a moment" answered Kordette "Listen." In the background they could hear music, and a lot of laughter. "Quick, over here." In the corner was a cupboard, and the sound was coming from inside. Very quietly they opened the door, not that it really mattered, because they could not have been heard above the noise coming from inside. For several minutes they stood watching Smiff and his friends playing their musical instruments, singing and dancing. The young Pulis began to dance along with them, when suddenly Smiff noticed they were there. The cupboard went very quiet. "What are you doing here?" demanded the Teddy Bear. "Came to find you" replied Kord "Debbie is missing you!" "Huh!" replied Smiff "she hardly ever noticed me, I got very bored, so I came looking for my friends!" "Oh dear," said Kordette, "you should have told her, poor girl is worried about you. The house has been searched and searched again." "She really likes you, and misses you terribly. Debbie didn’t want to go to school today she was so concerned." "Please, come home with us and make her happy" the young Pulid said together. "But I like it here with my friends, we play music, sing and dance." "So does Debbie, maybe you should show her what you can do …" "Do you think she would let me visit my friends sometime?" " Of course she would, just as long as you tell her where you are going." "By the way, how did you get here?" asked Kord. "Got into the back of the Aunts car when she called Friday afternoon. Luckily for me she went on to a toy fair where I hopped out, then got a lift back here to the shop with the other bears who had been on display." "Now that’s odd" said Kordette, "nobody thought we had any visitors. Wonder why Aunt called?" "She had a box with her" replied Smiff. "A box? We haven’t seen a box." "Aunt left it in the porch, tucked away in the corner." "Well, Smiff, are you coming …..?" Smiff said farewell to his friends, and followed the young Pulis out of the cupboard where Kordette wished hard they were all home at the Manor. The Mops and their new companion Smiff arrived back in the dog room, Kordette rushed upstairs to Debbie’s room where young lady was trying to concentrate on her homework. The Puli sidled up to Debbie wagging her tail and gently carrying Smiff in her mouth, placing her front paws on Debbie’s legs Kordette gently dropped the Teddy Bear on to her lap. Initially Debbie was not sure whether to be angry, pleased or simply to cry, she held Smiff tight, looking at the Puli questioningly "Where did you find him?" she demanded, just as Kord came through the door dragging along a box. "What … ?" Hearing the commotion the rest of the family came to see what was happening, all delighted and surprised to see that Smiff had been found. The box was clearly marked "Debbie" so she slowly unwrapped the plain brown paper. Inside was a note from her Aunt explaining she had found the enclosed Teddy Bear amongst her collection. The Aunt said she could not remember exactly where the bear had come from, her name however is Posey and somewhere the Aunt seemed to recall seeing a picture of her with Smiff …… or maybe it had been in her imagination ….. On hearing the name, Smiff sitting on the bed beside Debbie seemed to come alive and Debbie was sure that when she placed Posey beside him, he gave her a quick kiss. Very quietly Smiff had also added "no more dull days around here, now I have one of my friends living here!"
Many thanks to Chris Hoggins for allowing the use of "Smiff" and "Posey" in this story. Many more delightful Teddy Bears can be found on Chris's web site:
